“Hands off our education” read one banner, summing up the message to the government from the protest against their plans to force all schools to convert to academies, organised by Leeds NUT on March 23rd.

At less than two days notice around 60 teachers and supporters, predominantly from the NUT but with a few from NASUWT and ATL, gathered in Dortmund Square, Leeds to protest against these plans.
Speaker after speaker, including a teacher currently working in academy, hammered the proposals and spelt out the devastating impact it would have on education. But the resignation of IDS last friday and the Tory divisions over Europe also were a reason for several speakers to take confidence that this was something the government could be defeated on.
