The United Kingdom already has the highest rail fares in Europe. With this in mind as well as the overcrowded, unstaffed, and a lot of the time late services that people often find themselves in on their daily commutes, communters will have been shocked to learn of the 3.6% increase to our rail fairs, announced today, Tuesday 19th August, to be implemented in the new year. This increase will bring fare rises to levels 25% higher than 2010.
Ben Dixon, Leeds Socialist Party
Action for Rail, a coalition of trade unions and campaign groups in favour of renationalising the railways, held events to protest this fare hike outside 50 train stations nationally to inform people of the ridiculous and unfair changes.
In Leeds, Socialist Party members joined other trade unionists and activists outside Leeds train station. The support we got was fantastic, with many people understanding that the rail network is vital to our economy and environment. Free-post cards were handed out from Action for Rail in their thousands for people to lobby their MP’s to reverse the unjustifiable changes to our rail fares.
