Leeds Socialist Party members visited pickets at the fire station on Kirkstall Road on Monday 14th July to support the latest round of action as part of their ongoing dispute over attacks on their pensions (see numerous previous articles). This is in the form of short 2-hour stoppages over the times of shift changes during the week, 15 periods in all.
Iain Dalton, Leeds Socialist Party
Pickets told us how a number of fire appliances have been removed from stations for the duration of the strike despite crews being in work for the vast majority of the days covering the strike action. In another provactive move, the Chief Fire Officer, Simon Pilling, has authorised that strikebreakers who cover the two strike periods in a day will be paid for the full day ie. between 6am and 7pm. This is from someone who said the dispute was nothing to do with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service!
We hope to go back to visit a number of other fire station pickets in West Yorkshire over the course of the rest of the action, and would encourage all other trade unionists to do so.
