Around 15 members of the RMT and supporters of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition protested outside Leeds Railway Station whilst the Department for Transport consulted on plans for the new Northern and TransPennine Express franchises. These plans include introducing driver-only operation and cuts to ticket offices (see https://leedssocialistparty.wordpress.com/2014/07/08/oppose-attacks-on-railways-in-the-north/)

Over 400 people signed letters to their MPs protesting these attacks, alongside others at a similar protest earlier in the day in York. Most people hadn’t heard about these proposals until we mentioned it to them, and had big concerns about the safety of trains, particularly if guards are removed.
The campaign will continue over the next month and a half until the end of the consultation period. The next big event will be at the Durham Miner’s Gala this weekend.
