Members of Unison and Unite at Leeds University held a lobby of the university council meeting on Thursday night against attacks on their pensions. Local members of Socialist Students and the Socialist Party went along to show our support.

The scheme is over 100% funded and the surplus is continuing to increase. Given that the university is wealthier than it has ever been at the moment, there is absolutely no justification for this scandalous attack on low paid staff.
Disbracefully, the meeting was brought forward by an hour, no doubt to try to avoid the angry trade unionists outside who feel they’ve been let down by management. If, as the unions suspect, no satisfactory concessions are made to the formula of ‘work longer, pay more, get less’ then both unions will be considering further action, including potential industrial action.
