PCS members in HM Revenue and Custom’s (HMRC) took part in several half hour walkouts on Monday 16 January, against the threat of privatisation of call handling.

Two private companies, Sitel and Teleperformance, have been appointed to run year long call handling trials in HMRC tax credit contact centres in Lillyhall in Cumbria and Bathgate in Scotland. This could open the floodgates to further privatisation of services.

Outside the Bradford contact centre, despite the bitter cold, reps attempted to hold a short meeting at the end of the 10am to 10.30am walkout, which I addressed bringing solidarity greetings from Youth Fight for Jobs (see http://yorkshireyfj.wordpress.com/2012/01/16/hmrc-workers-walkout-over-privatisation/). PCS HMRC branches should be encouraged to hold workplace meetings to discuss the disupute how to take the action forward, including an escalation of the action.

Further action is due to be called for 31st January.
