Hundreds turn out to hear Billy Bragg perform

Over 200 people turned up at Occupy Leeds in City Square today to hear folk rocker Billy Bragg play a short set in solidarity with the camp. Starting off with a specially re-written version of ‘Which Side Are You On?’, referencing the occupy movement, he went through other wellknown songs such as ‘World Turned Upside Down’ before finishing with a rousing rendition of the Internationale.

Inbetween songs he raised the need to make sure that the Occupy movement was just the beginning of people starting to discuss and challenge existing society and the need to link up with the trade unions that are taking strike action in defense of their pensions on November 30th (N30).

The performance marked one week of the occupation, with new people getting drawn into the movement every day – and a fair number of people sticking around for the general assembly after the performance. The camp now has regular general assemblies at 2pm and 6pm, as well as functioning working groups for various tasks.

One of the key tasks for the next week is to continue to build upon the links that have been made with other campaigning groups in Leeds. An occupier, Rhiannon, spoke at last nights Youth Fight for Jobs meeting, and this week occupiers will hopefully be speaking at several rallies in the run up to N30.

A further task is to continue the discussion around the way forward. Everyone within the camp is united in opposing the corruption within the political elite, the banks, big business and tops of the media, the 1%. But further discussion is needed to clarify the way forward to replace what is rotten within society and transform it into a society free from exploitation, poverty and economic slavery. Socialist Party members will continue to support and participate within the occupation, as we have from its beginning, to offer our ideas of what this can be.
